HUMAN Pride Month

O for Others?? What are others??

We often see in the gender column of the applications that either it is Male, Female, or others. What are the others?? Why are these applications not gender-inclusive?? Others feel like aliens. Are they not from planet earth?? Others are the term people use to mention the LGBTQ community. The term feels so discriminatory. So, why do people still use it even after knowing all this? Maybe, lack of awareness. We don’t expect this in the 21st century.

In applications a person can be male, female, or just some “other” person. People think that “other” people don’t have any identity or gender. When will these forms be gender inclusive and when will genderqueer people get the same respect and equality? If someone calls you other… how would you feel?

How can we make it inclusive?

That is seriously not too much to ask. Just changing a few things will not make you a bad person. People ask for gender because simply they have one. But in many cases we see asking for gender in applications is very irrelevant and unnecessary.

Like we’re filling applications for which places you like to travel to? Asking about gender here is not very necessary. So, just don’t ask.  Maybe, ask when it is really very necessary.

Well, if you’re asking because it is very necessary, just ask What are your preferred pronouns? How hard can it be? Just provide another option:

  • Male
  • Female
  • Your preferred gender pronoun ____

It can be this easy and nobody will make anybody feel uncomfortable or discriminatory.

In many applications, we see that there are just two options. That is the basic gender binary, male or female. If you don’t belong to any of these, just make a third option by yourself and write it down by yourself. HUM ZIIDI HAI.

Or

If they ask what best describes you?

Male or female. Maybe write Hungry there. The thing that best describes us is food. So, deal with it.  If you’re not giving us many options we will do whatever we want. And write whatever we feel like.

Jokes apart, if we are trying to make things more gender-inclusive we have to make some changes.

So, what else can we write in the applications?

We can make other options like:

  • Man
  • Woman
  • Genderqueer/ Non-binary
  • Prefer not to disclose

If there is an absolute need to know the gender just add,

  • Transgender
  • Agender
  • Genderqueer
  • Non-binary
  • Genderfluid
  • Bigender
  • Trans man/ woman
  • Third gender

Well, if you want to know the sex of the person rather than the gender ask

I identify as…

  • Male
  • Female
  • Intersex
  • Male to Female (MtF)
  • Female to Male (FtM)

Well, you’re giving some time to create that application just a few more minutes to write and maybe you can make someone feel great and equal. Well, it is better than writing others.

Conclusion

If we all do these few things maybe people feel a little empowered. This is seriously the minimum you can do to make the LGBTQ community feel equal and safe. In our country, many people don’t know about this and many are still learning. The community has been fighting for this for a very long period. If we all become more gender-inclusive and an ally for the community. We can make a big change.

We don’t want anyone to put it into a box by just giving people two options in an application. This should not be acceptable in 2021. As we said be like Bojack Horseman and appreciate all sex and gender. Be more welcoming towards learning new things. So, If we missed out on anything above, do let us know. We are all open to learning and make changes. So, just stop writing OTHERS IN THE APPLICATION. BE MORE GENDER-INCLUSIVE.
